PS3134: Research Methods in Psychology

About this Tutorial

This tutorial builds on the research tools taught in Health Psychology 1 and comprises advanced skills for locating relevant articles for your Research Proposal.
It should take you about two hours to complete, including the two-part Library Assignment found on your Canvas course page for week 2. After reviewing the entire tutorial (text & videos), complete Part I of the Search Strategy Worksheet assignment - feedback will be provided on your assignments through Canvas, and in class.

Part II of the assignment is to complete the University of Indiana paraphrasing tutorial and practice questions. The link is on your assignment.

Tutorial Competencies:

  1. Understand types of articles including primary, scholarly and peer reviewed. Create effective search strategies using advanced search techniques including specialized database features and Boolean operators.
  2. Understand the difference between subject headings and keywords, and how to incorporate them into search strategies.
  3. Ability to run advanced PsycINFO and PubMed  searches, and to find subject headings within these databases.
  4. Understand why it is important to cite sources and how to construct citations in APA style.
