Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Bastyr University

BU Library & Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Books on a shelf

The Bastyr University Library is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment for students, staff and faculty which is central to academic excellence and freedom. To achieve this, we aim to review, evaluate, and rectify library systems, policies and procedures to reflect DEI values outlined in the BU strategic framework (below).

Areas of focus:

  • acquisitions - ensure BIPOC voices are represented to the extent possible.
  • access - improve access by updating subject headings and removing offensive ones from the catalog.
  • information literacy - educate students, staff and faculty about the issues of access and underrepresented voices.
  • physical space - ensure the library is welcoming for everyone.

A collection of library books and videos that promote competency and awareness of the dimensions and complexities involved in caring for people from diverse cultural backgrounds, and addressing racial inequality and privilege issues.

Please contact the library with questions and suggestions, or we encourage you to make an appointment with any of our reference and instruction librarians.

Bastyr University DEI Strategic Framework & Plan

The DEI Strategic Framework is founded on the principle that diversity, equity, and inclusion work is everyone’s responsibility. Each member of the Bastyr community must play an active role in creating and nurturing an inclusive and equitable community where each one feels seen, heard and belongs.

Library Projects: Ongoing & Completed
  • Research debates
Introductions to some of the issues and on-going debates intended to prompt further inquiry and critical evaluation of what is found– and not found – in the research for areas of study at BU. They are not a comprehensive overview of the field or the state of the research in the field. Librarians are available to help explore the research, and help answer questions about the context of that research.

  • Collaborate with faculty to recommend diverse/inclusive resources (on request)

  • Write blog posts relevant to DEI

Library Projects: To Be Completed
  • Update offensive/outdated Library of Congress subject headings.

  • Conduct a collection diversity audit.

  • Revise collection development guidelines to ensure a diverse collection.

  • Create guidelines for displays to ensure diverse voices are included.

  • Assess physical space for inclusiveness.

  • Research issues and debates pertaining to libraries and weave into our instruction.

  • Have a discussion with the Library Advisory Group about how the library can amplify its commitment to DEI and how they can ensure that all actions moving forward are viewed through a DEI lens.

  • Research how to include diversity in research.
