Citation Managers

Citation managers have 3 distinct benefits:

  1. generate automatic citations (and can change citation style at the touch of a button)
  2. organize resources in one place - from websites to book titles
  3. allow you to build a personal research database - often with full text access, even after you graduate

At Bastyr we use Mendeley - it's free, it allows full text uploads, Mendeley works with your web browser and Microsoft Word to automatically insert correctly formatted citations.  This allows you to seamlessly find a resource, add it to your Mendeley library, and then cite it in your papers, all at the click of a button!

For DAOM, particularly the Reading Research classes, and your capstone, please use Mendeley to organize your resources.

This page will provide the basic set-up information, but we have more demo videos on the Mendeley Toolkit

Getting Started

First-time setup takes about 15-20 minutes depending on your computer's download speed. Here are the basic steps:

1. Watch the brief video in the Mendeley Intro Video box.

2. Go to Mendeley.com and create your account.

3. Download the Mendeley Application to your laptop or desktop computer.

4. Install the Web Importer Tool and add to your browser's toolbar; this makes adding PDFs a piece of cake!.

5. Install Mendeley Cite (Word add in) so that Mendeley can format your references for papers and reports.

6. Very important for 1st-time setup: select the Organize my files option when configuring Mendeley Desktop!

  • This ensures any PDFs you add will be stored in Mendeley's data directory; otherwise, a PDF you've added to Mendeley can vanish when you delete the original file from your computer.
  • Mendeley can then rename the PDF in a logical manner using the article title and author name.

--On MS Windows, open Mendeley Desktop and select: Tools > Options > File Organizer, then check Organize my files.

--On Mac OSX, open Mendeley Desktop and select: Mendeley Desktop > Preferences… > File Organizer, then check Organize my files.
