NM7142: Critical Evaluation of the Literature: b. CINAHL w/ Full Text

Basic CINAHL Searching

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) Description:  Offers citations and full text articles related to nursing and the allied health fields. CINAHL indexes far fewer journals than PubMed, but nursing has always been hospitable to natural medicine and @20% of its citations and full text articles are unique. Watch this basic searching video for some useful tips.

CINAHL Search Example

Clinical scenario:

Your adult patient was recently diagnosed with cancer and has asked you if there are any mind-body therapies (e.g. meditation, progressive relaxation, deep breathing) that might be effective in reducing their anxiety level.

1st: Identify PICO as specifically as possible:

Patient Population (or Problem) Intervention (or Exposure) Comparison (if known) Outcome Measure(s)
adults with cancer experiencing anxiety mind-body therapies no use of mind-body therapies

reduced levels of anxiety as reported by the patien

2nd: Frame your clinical question using elements from your PICO:

Q. Are mind-body therapies effective in reducing anxiety in adults with cancer?

3rd:  From PICO to search query:

Note: In the example below, official CINAHL subject headings are capitalized to distinguish them from keywords (but capital letters aren't necessary in running searches).

CINAHL search query:

Anxiety AND (cancer OR Neoplasms) AND (Mind Body Techniques OR Relaxation Techniques)

Filters applied: 2000-2012 (Publication Date); Academic Journals (Source Types); All Adult (Age)

Explanation of CINAHL search query:

Search terms: Anxiety, Neoplasms, Mind Body Techniques and Relaxation Techniques are CINAHL Headings (subject headings); cancer is a keyword.

Why parentheses? Think algebra! Parentheses are necessary when you use both AND and OR in the same search; they tell CINAHL how to run the search, i.e. first look for citations with Mind Body Techniques and/or Relaxation Techniques, then, within that set of results, look for citations that were also assigned the CINAHL term, Anxiety.

Filters/Limits: The full selection of CINAHL's filters appear on the left sidebar after you run the search; we recommend that you run the search first and then limit.
