Academic Literature

A peer-reviewed article undergoes a rigorous appraisal process, often including revisions to the original manuscript before publication. Peer-reviewed journals employ an official editorial process that entails review and approval by the authors' peers who are experts in the same discipline.

Most (but not all) peer-reviewed articles are published in scholarly publications. Some trade publications are also peer-reviewed.

Scholarly Articles

A scholarly article is published in a journal authored by academics for a target audience that is mainly academic. The scholarly journal print format isn't usually a glossy magazine and is published by a recognized society with academic goals and missions.

Most (but not all) scholarly publications are peer reviewed. Sometimes a scholarly journal contains only specific portions of its content that are peer-reviewed; while also publishing non-reviewed items such as literature reviews, editorials and conference proceedings.
