BC3123: Organic Chemistry

Finding a research article

Once you have decided on a chemical or reaction to research, you need to identify at least one research paper that you can read and critically summarize and evaluate.

Chemistry research can be found in many of the biomedical databases that Bastyr subscribes to, we suggest trying PubMed or Science Direct. Check out the videos below to get a basic orientation.

PubMed as a starting point for finding chemistry research

Searching tips:  use basic keyword searching e.g.  "lipids" or "lipid metabolism"

You can also try adding in the term "chemistry" to get at research that specifically focuses on the chemistry; rather than the therapeutic properties.

Once you have some search results; remember that you can filter by article type to find either primary research (reports of studies and trials) or secondary research (reviews or summaries of several studies or trials).

Science Direct is another great starting point for finding and accessing articles on particular chemicals or chemical reactions.

You can simply search by keyword, by entering the chemical or reaction you're interested in,

and then filter to find "research articles", and select a PDF to read the full text.
