BC3123: Organic Chemistry

Starting the research

When starting a research topic, consider the scope of the research you need to do. Try not to pick something so generic that it's not going to add anything to your knowledge of the topic, nor something so niche that you struggle to find any research at all!

Selecting a chemical or reaction

Research and resources pertaining to chemicals and reactions can be found in several of our library resources.

If you're unsure of where to start, you can search our collection of clinical eBooks to see if they give you any starting points; you can search for relevant textbook chapters in Access Medicine, and Clinical Key eBook collections.

  • filter for ebooks
  • run a keyword search on "chemistry" or a particular chemical reaction to see if there's something to get you started.

TIP: if there's something in a textbook, that's a good indication that it's a well-studied topic, and should have a reasonable research base to explore!  The textbook will also provide you with some background information to help inform your assessment of the research you find in other databases.
