BO8302: Botanical Formulations Lab 5: Home

Overview

Below are resources for your Historical Formula Research Paper. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to dig in. This kind of searching doesn't lend itself to the obvious resources. That said, you'll learn new research techniques and resources that you can use for future assignments.

Be sure to review the advanced Google search techniques, in particular, the third one with instructions on how to search within a specific website or domain. If you've prowled around and come up empty, reach out to your librarians.

Top tips for approaching this assignment.

You will have to search multiple sources to piece together, find pieces of information and then "pull the thread" to see what you can find out about each "clue".  Think of this as an investigation, or detective work!

Search for your formula in Les Moore's Classical Formulas in the Western Herbal Tradition.  If your formula is there, you will find information on when it was created, by whom, what the constituents are AND what it's used for!

You will need to go further than just the information in Classical Formulas in the Western Herbal Tradition, but it's a great starting point.  You will then need to search either on the open web, or in specific herbal databases to find out as much as you can about:

  • The doctors who developed the formula (Use advanced Google searches to help focus your search)
  • The herbal tradition - is it Thomsonisan Herbalism?  Evolved from it?  (Hint: you will do more reading than writing for this - find out about these movements and then summarize the relevant information.)
  • What are the constituents used for?  Look up information in dispensatories (many are digitized and available online - see website list below).
  • What can be found out about each constituent in Natural Medicines database, or RAMP?
  • When was it developed? What kind of diseases or health concerns were a problem at that time?
  • Are there any historical advertisements available?  Are there competitors or other variations of the remedy?

Advanced Google Search Techniques

Google: try the advanced techniques to dig deeper. What's the difference between Google and Google Scholar? (see box below) The latter searches primarily academic sites (not commercial ones). Google searches all formats including blogs, personal websites, government and commercial. It's up to you to apply your critical thinking skills to the results.

Here are some ways to refine your search in order to find the most relevant, reliable sources, and filter out some of the less appropriate information.

  • Put phrases in " "
  • use an asterisk * to replace an unknown word or letter
  • Search for sites run by the government or education institutions
    • Echinacea site:.gov      OR     Echinacea site:.edu
    • mother's cordial site:https://www.henriettes-herb.com/ (searches Henriette's website for mother's cordial)
  • search a specific site by typing you search word and the site you want to search like this:
    • Echinacea site:unitedplantavers.org
  • use a tilde in front of a word to include synonyms
    • ~echinacea
