Databases & Search Engines

Why can't I just Google? Being an efficient searcher means knowing when to use what tool. Most published research articles are protected by copyright and/or aren't available in full text via the Web.

Watch this video to learn about how the differences between databases and search engines can dramatically affect your results.

When to Use the Web for Research

Searching for scholarly information on the web may be appropriate, especially when you are looking for:

  • Professional organizations and/or expert websites: often they publish their own journal, or other publications, and some online access is usually free.
  • Very recent, or cutting edge, topic
  • Statistics or government info
  • Dissertations and/or theses
  • Unpublished or obscure information

Criteria for Evaluating Websites

The quality of resources on the Web varies greatly and it's up to you to assess the sources and information you find. Here are some criteria to consider:

  • Who runs the website?
  • Who funds the site?
  • What is the site's purpose?
  • Where does the information come from?
  • How is the information selected?
  • How current is the information?
