Keeping up with Clinical Research: Manage your Research

This LibGuide features strategies for keeping current with research.

Components of an Information Management System

Many highly functional, free and fee-based information management programs are available, but none of them does it all. Your system will work best if it has a mix of tools, including:

  • Research managers/PDF organizers: Save, organize, highlight, annotate and/or cite research articles. Some tools, such as Mendeley, also provide a social component that lets you share studies and explore those that others have found. See the Mendeley Toolkit (next box) to get started.
  • Personal accounts in search engines/databases: A PubMed MyNCBI account lets you save search queries and notifies you when new citations are received, allowing you to move forward in time with topics of interest. TRIP, a medical search engine, lets you specify areas of interest and sends a monthly summary of new research. A Google Scholar account allows you to save citations and alerts.
  • Note taking resources: Primarily used for creating and managing your notes, and saving clips of websites; examples are: Evernote, One Note.

Mendeley Toolkit

Mendeley is a free resource for collecting and organizing the research articles you import or collect from databases and the web. See this guide, Mendeley Toolkit for all the details.
