Congratulations to Dr. Lumiere, editor in chief, and the editorial staff of Convergent Points: An East-West Case Report Journal, newly launched in February. Focused primarily on acupuncture and East-Asian medicine case reports, Convergent Points is an online, open access, peer reviewed publication.
The importance of case reports cannot be underestimated. They provide valuable information that may result in the discovery of novel diseases and treatment, and generate hypotheses for further investigation. in some cases, such as for rare diseases, case reports may be the best available evidence. Additionally, case reports provide educational opportunities for students and new practitioners to enter the field of medical writing.
The two main weaknesses of case reports are well known: they’re observational and there’s only one subject. Convergent Points “recognizes the weaknesses of cases studies but aims to compile a database of rigorous case reports which then may be analyzed to yield statistical significance by using the tools of complexity science.”
Convergent Points is indexed in BU journals. To search for it and other journals that the library subscribes to go to the library homepage and select the Journals tab; enter the name of the journal. As always, if you have any questions, please contact the library (library@bastyr.edu)
