TR5104: Research Methods in Health Science

About this Tutorial

One of the major course objectives for this class is to search the health sciences literature efficiently by identifying relevant and appropriate studies. This tutorial provides the skills necessary to find studies for your Literature Review assignment, and transferable skills you can use in other classes and in future practice.

It should take you about an hour to complete the tutorial.  Please make sure you finish the entire tutorial (all text, videos, and feedback). This way, you will be prepared for the class work with an instruction librarian.

After completing the tutorial, complete the assignment.

BEFORE CLASS: Please ensure that you have signed up for a Mendeley account and downloaded the desktop version.  You will need this to organize your resources for your annotated bibliography.

Tutorial Competencies

  1. Identify research terms and study types.

  2. Understand when it is appropriate to use the web for research and how to evaluate content found there.

  3. Design searches in PubMed, Nutrition and Food Sciences, and CINAHL.

  4. Revise searches by changing search terms, using tools like the MeSH database, and/or using filters/limits to retrieve a more relevant set of results.

  5. Understand the importance of an information management system.
