General Database Search Tips

Databases offer more options for setting limits than Google, so save yourself some time and learn a few! By thinking about your terms and setting some limits, you'll retrieve better hits.

1. Use subject headings (see Medline search tips) when appropriate, but be creative and use your own search terms too.

2. Connect your termsAND narrows your search; all terms must be included in your citations. OR broadens your search and connects synonyms and related terms. Any or all of the terms may be included in your hits.

Examples:

newborns AND toddlers

(King County OR Pierce County)

3. Know your Limits! In most databases, you can limit by date, type of article, and population (Medline).

Using MeSH

The MeSH Database is a fact-finding tool to help you identify appropriate subject headings for your topic.
