This tutorial will teach you herbal science research techniques so that you can efficiently find relevant studies and journal articles for your research proposal. In addition, these search tips and techniques will be useful throughout your education and as you continue in your chosen career path. All programs at Bastyr have an information literacy component. For the Herbal Sciences program, this is the second tutorial. See the objectives below.

1. Understand what research is and basic concepts.
2. Differentiate between a search engine and a database, and know when to use each tool.
3. Critically evaluate content on the world wide web.
4. Apply general criteria for selecting databases.
5. Create a basic search strategy.
6. Run searches in PubMed and Review of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants (RAMP), set limits as needed, broaden or narrow as appropriate.
7. Understand when to cite and how to cite in AMA format.
