Kenmore Library and University Research Committee hosts "Tea at 3" Kickoff

On Monday, June 13, the University Research Committee (URC) hosted a "Tea at 3" event in the Kenmore library to kick off this year's Research Symposium and shared some words to celebrate the work this committee has been doing to highlight Bastyr University's research initiatives.

First, Paul Amieux, Director of the Bastyr University Research Institute (BURI) and URC member welcomed all attendees to the 12th Annual Student and Faculty Research Symposium and Cristina Ciupitu-Plath, Co-chair of the URC provided the audience with an overview of the activities of this committee in its inaugural year. Over the course of two hours, faculty, students, and staff then had the opportunity to connect, have conversations around the symposium contributions, and exchange future research ideas.

Thank you to all who came by to share in the day and to enjoy some refreshments! Below, read some words from the URC and a few photos to commemorate the day.

Ekaterini Papadopoulou, Director of Library Services, and Co-Chair of the URC

Paul'Over the past 3 years, Basic Sciences, BURI and Bastyr Library, with the prodigious skills of Senior Librarian at BUC Zemirah Lee and the Director of the Bastyr Library Ekaterini Papadopoulou, have developed the online research platform you will now be experiencing this week for the 12th Annual Student and Faculty Research Symposium 2022—this represents a huge leap in the documentation of the research output of our institution with the added fantastic benefit of an online archive of this research output.

The Annual Student and Faculty Research Symposium now also serves as a training experience for students, where they can attend presentation on conference abstract, poster and presentation best practices, and also receive feedback on their submitted abstracts all through the online Canvas Course page.

The end goal of all this work is to integrate research across the University and eliminate the siloing of research that has happened in the past. Everyone at the University: faculty, staff and students should have an opportunity to learn about or participate in research in meaningful ways, and the new University Research Pages, the new University Research Committee, and the new online Student and Faculty Research Symposium are all major steps in this direction.'

(Paul Amieux, BURI Director and URC member)

Cristina'Based on a comprehensive institutional research review process, one of the first steps in the work of the URC was to formalize a research philosophy statement that clearly highlights the diversity of research methods and approaches currently utilized at Bastyr by staff, faculty, and students in the many programs offered at our University. This same diversity is reflected by the contributions that you are going to be able to interact with as part of the Bastyr Research Symposium that we are here to celebrate today and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the presenters for these contributions to strengthening communication around ongoing research at Bastyr, who we are and what we have to offer."

(Cristina Ciupitu-Plath, URC Co-Chair)
