Sharing Knowledge - The Bastyr Gardens' Story

by Ekaterini Papadopoulou on 2021-04-30T16:46:00-07:00 | 0 Comments

Last Spring, you may have seen an article by Bastyr Gardens’ Katie Vincent in United Plant Savers….

There are many ways to publish and disseminate information and knowledge, so we wanted to highlight Katie’s work in getting the word out to the wider community about the Sacred Seeds Trail.

When United Plant Savers reached out and asked for a contribution, Katie seized the opportunity to share the Bastyr Gardens’ work.  Sometimes publishing opportunities come to you through partnerships you have cultivated over time; Katie’s work cultivating relationships with community organizations and responding to their calls for content allows her to share the work of the Bastyr Gardens with a wider audience while building a mutually beneficial partnership that opens wider doors for connection.

When it came to writing the article, Katie described her process and has some of the following tips:

Look for an angle that will appeal to the audience, in this case, the UPS readers and members:

Katie considered what sort of fresh offering could she bring that would invite conversation or and build community, rather than just report on the project.

In order to write an impactful and thought-provoking article, Katie spent time considering how the project has evolved through a process of trying to decolonize the project, approaching it with humility, and striving to be inclusive and collaborative with tribal nations.

Take the initiative, but keep the wider team looped in:

It’s often hard to find the time to write up extra projects beyond a full-time job, but Katie was able to seize the opportunity to write a contribution for UPS herself. She was mindful to include her supervisor in the process to be sure the messaging and direction felt aligned for the Botanical Medicine department’s mission.

Ask for feedback!

Katie noted that she wished she had included a call to action at the end of her article to encourage readers in the UPS network to reach out to her and continue the conversation – something to consider if you’re sharing a project in the future.

“I would say really believing in the worth of what you are discovering, or what you know - if it's something that you're passionate about, there's somebody else who's going to want to hear about it, too, and that it can have positive impact … it's always worth trying, you never know what's going to happen.”
