This guide provides resources for exploring new directions in complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) research. The current focus on advancing this clinical evidence base occurs as issues in applying existing study methodologies to CIM are becoming increasingly clear.
Holism, represented by and within each individual and the "ecological landscapes" we inhabit forms the core of CIM. Reflecting this, the new research approaches incorporate more holistic methods of data collection. For example, the emerging whole system, or whole practice, approach recognizes CIM's most basic tenets, i.e. highly individualized and multi-modal (therefore, synergistic) treatment protocols, and the importance of "contextual healing" (per Miller and Kaptchuk) via the patient-practitioner relationship.
